This Haunted Paws beginner guide is the first session in Steam Demo 4992280, live since October 8, 2026, from LazyFlock. You control two puppies, sniff, dig, and bark, pin finds on the owner's clue board, and leave on foot when a creature shows up. The full game (Steam 2861080) is still TBA. Verified October 24, 2026 · demo store page · full store page.

On October 19, 2026, LazyFlock named seven breeds, nine accessories, and a kitten-in-disguise fur, and reported 1,000,000 wishlists. Haunted Paws had already taken the FYNG Indie Award at gamescom 2026. Those are looks and studio facts. They are not a damage rank. The next section is the order to run before you touch the street.

What do I do in the first session?

Work the apartment until the clue board writes a next step. The street, the fish errand, and the factory come after that sentence, not before it. How far the build lets you go is covered on the demo page.

  • Do01Launch Steam Demo 4992280. Wishlist the full app only if you want the release notice
  • Do02On the setup screen, set the spider presentation before you lock a breed. One build offers standard spiders and an arachnophobia-friendly option
  • Do03Give each puppy a different coat so callouts stay obvious
  • Do04Bring the second player in with online co-op, split-screen, Friend's Pass, or Remote Play Together
  • Do05Search the messy room. Sniff the broken window and the claw marks
  • Do06Sniff the owner's shoe, then bark at the fridge creature only if the room is empty
  • Do07Walk back to the board and stop when it sends you toward the factory
  • Do08On a chase, both puppies run for a door you already opened

The first hour is three places

Place one is the owner's apartment. Place two is the street outside, where a cat detective trades keys for two fish. Place three is the approach to the factory the board names, including a dig for an ID card if you reach locked doors. Do not open a mansion map and try to clear wings the demo has not started.

A how-to-play pass is that spine in order. The next section is the setup screen, because a bad coat choice is the only "build" this game asks for.

How do I set up the two puppies?

The October 19, 2026 news names these seven breeds: German Shepherd, Great Dane, Jack Russell, Mastiff, Retriever, Rottweiler, Shiba Inu. The same note lists nine accessories and a kitten-in-disguise fur. Pick from the options your build actually shows. A breed name that is not on that list stays Unverified until you see the swatch yourself.

Fur, ears, tail, and voice are the rest of the picker. They change how you spot your puppy in a split view. They do not change how far a sniff reaches. There is no verified stat block, so a tier list of German Shepherd versus Shiba Inu is a different game.

Kitten fur is a coat, not a third character

The kitten-in-disguise fur is still one of the two puppies. In one demo session that coat did not offer a black-cat recolor, so do not promise a black kitten until the swatch is on your screen. A black cat as the cause of the kidnapping is a media claim and stays Unverified. It is not a fur you must equip to open the apartment.

Hats do not unlock doors

Nine accessories were in the October 19 drop. Choose one you can see past in a dark room. They identify your puppy. They are not keys. The full accessory write-up is the breeds page.

Once both puppies are readable at a glance, the next section is the messy room. That is the first real prompt.

How do I search the apartment?

The room prompt is to find clues about what happened in the apartment. Sniff what the prompt is pointing at, then return to the board. Carrying a shoe around as a trophy before the board accepts it does not advance the night.

Haunted Paws puppy sniffing the broken apartment window

Hold the door with both puppies

Apartment doors that separate you use a hold, not a tap. If your hold does nothing, the other puppy is not on the handle yet. Call which side you have, then hold together. One press from one puppy is how pairs lose a minute on the first door. Role splits like this are collected on the puzzle page.

Sniff in this order

Start on the broken window. Claw marks beside it are a second pin, not wallpaper. Then sniff the owner's shoe. It is evidence. Toys, snacks, and a ball on the floor are not the board's question.

A small creature in the fridge is a board item. Bark at it when the room is quiet. That bark surfaces the snack ad the board uses for "why was the owner taken?" If something is already moving toward you, skip the bark and leave. Barking in a chase is covered in the creature section below.

Leave the evidence where it lies

Sniff and pin. Do not rearrange the messy room to "clean the scene." The useful habit is: sniff, walk to the board, read whether it still says it needs more, sniff the next object. The window alone will not satisfy the board.

Those sniffs only count once they are on the board. The next section is that board, prompt by prompt.

How do I pin clues on the board?

The investigation board is in the apartment. Walk back to it after every real sniff. Read the question it is asking, pin the object that answers that question, and stop adding toys. The action list for sniff, dig, and bark lives on the clue page. This table is only the first-night sequence.

Who took them?Claw marks, and the fridge creature if the board asksThe board calls it a monster, not a person you can fight
Where next?Nothing new. Read the sentenceThe board sends you toward the factory

Use the spelling on your board

The apartment board shows a snack ad and a factory. In the demo that company reads as Chompos. If your build spells it differently, follow the letters on the board.

Names that are not on the board

Some previews call the owner Kira Pawsley. That name is Unverified. The board says owner. Use that word with your partner. A black cat behind the kidnapping is also a media claim and stays Unverified. Do not search the apartment for a black cat to unlock the factory sentence.

Say the factory sentence out loud before you take the street. Until it is on the board, the next section's two-puppy work has nothing to aim at.

When do both puppies have to act?

Published party options are online co-op, local split-screen, Friend's Pass, and Remote Play Together. Friend's Pass is how a friend joins this demo free. The full game is not on sale, and its price is TBA. Setup steps for the couch and the invite are on the co-op page.

A solo-only mode is Unverified. Prompts that want both puppies will wait on the second hold. Do not promise a one-player clear. If your friend is not on PC, stop: console dates are Unverified, and the check is the platform page.

Call the role before you grab

The cat detective on the street wants two fish, then gives up keys. One fish is close enough to sniff. The second is a short search, including a shop interior. Deliver both before you expect the keys. A spoken name for that cat is Unverified. Follow the fish line.

The car is the same idea: the prompt splits the job. Use the words on screen. The puzzle page holds the pattern for later doors. Give the puppies different coats first, or you will swap the pedal and the wheel in the dark.

Once you are outside, a creature can end the puzzle. The next section is the run, before you learn a factory dig.

What do I do when a creature shows up?

The demo input that works is to run or take the long way around. The store page also talks about resolving sinister creatures and the past they hide. This session does not give you a weapon, a rune, or a breed that hits harder while you wait for that story beat. Drop the puzzle input and move both puppies.

What you seeDo this
A chase starts on the streetBoth puppies run for a door you already opened. A slow door is a hit
Someone barks during the chaseStop barking. Sound pulls the creature with you
Fridge creature, room is emptyBark at it. That is how the snack ad reaches the board
Spider-bodied creature on the factory approachTurn around and run back the way you entered
Locked factory doors ask for an ID cardDig nearby until the card comes up. The camera lifts so you can see the hole
A preview nickname for any of the aboveLeave it Unverified. Describe the body, do not invent a bestiary name

Bark is a tool with a volume problem

Bark at objects when the room is quiet. The fridge is the apartment example. Do not bark to "fight" a chase. The warning in the demo is literal: the monster hears it. The creatures page is where evade routes belong. This page only needs the first-night rule.

The spider option was on the setup screen

If you chose the arachnophobia-friendly presentation, keep it. That toggle changes how spiders are shown. It does not add an attack. A spider-bodied creature still means turn around. Media names for it stay Unverified.

The ID card dig is a search, not a boss. Stay on the dig prompt until the card is in a puppy's mouth, then use it on the doors that asked for it. Missing posters in that area are extra reading. Pin one only if the board asks.

You now have the first-night loop. Next: the demo page, for how long this build actually runs, which of those errands are the secrets, and what to do if Steam drops you out.

What next

Next: read demo length, secrets, and crashes before you tell a friend the session is short.

Sniff, dig, and bark in more detail on the clue page. Door roles stay on puzzles. Looks stay on breeds.

Party setup is couch co-op and Friend's Pass. Console dates stay on platforms. If your breed list does not match the October 19 names, check the LazyFlock Discord and trust the picker you see. The FAQ below catches the name and the code question.
